Pahlmeyer Anniversary Label Released

Pahlmeyer Winery of Napa Valley released its 30th Anniversary 2016 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red, a red wine blend with a special commemorative label.

Vintner Jayson Pahlmeyer established Pahlmeyer in the 1980s with a string of successful vintages for his knockout, newcomer wines. His irrepressible spirit drove an unrelenting quest for the highest quality wine in every single vintage. “Everything worth doing is worth doing to excess,” is one of his favorite mantras.

Wine of the Week: : 2016 Murrieta’s Well The Spur, 90 Points

Though Livermore Valley has a long and enviable wine history dating back to the 1840s when grapevines went into the ground, it nonetheless has been overshadowed by its northern neighbors. That oversight is being corrected with a slew of exceptional wines.

Murrieta’s Well traces its heritage back to 1884, and though The Spur was only created as a blend in 2010, it shows what this Valley can produce.

Phinney Pays More Than Lip Service To Rye

Layered and complex, Lip Service is the first release of Dave Phinney’s highly anticipated three year-old Rye Whiskey. Each barrel is hand-selected for its unique attributes by the man himself. The youngest rye in the blend is aged for a minimum of three years in new charred American oak barrels and then uniquely finished in wine barrels from Phinney’’s Grenache project in Maury, France.

Ragged Branch Wheated Bourbon, 92 Points

Ragged Branch Wheated Bourbon Whiskey is the four-year-old brainchild of Alex Toomy (owner of Ragged Branch) and the late, great distiller, Dave Pickerell. The whiskey was released in September of last year and since then it’s received its share of positive reviews from consumer and trade journals. And it’s about to get another one from us.

90 proof, Ragged Branch Wheated Bourbon Whiskey includes 66% corn, and 17% malted barley and is distinctly Virginia.

Levendi Legacy 15th Anniversary Edition, Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, 97 Points

This deep cherry colored wine, with the most subtle hint of amber makes for a wonderful pour. We let this breathe for a bit and it paid off in spades. Blueberry, blackberry, and currant turn to subtle licorice on the back palate. Cedar on the aftertaste. The flavors glide along and the mouthfeel is exquisite. This is a robust but graceful wine. A wonderful trade-up for Napa cab-loving customers. Get this one on your wine menu.

Levendi Sweetwater Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2016, 96 Points

Dark cherry red in color, this wine sparkles, adding to the appearance of any restaurant dining table. First impression on the nose is clove (in careful measure). Dry delivery to the palate, dark fruit aromas, followed by restrained mocha. This wine layers flavor without piling it on. Upon second entry, we noticed distinct dark cherry and blackberry notes. Ready to serve, but solid acidity and overall balance make this an age-worthy wine.

Levendi Estate Chardonnay, Napa Valley 2016, 93 Points

Stunning clarity, in a straw crystal clear appearance, this chardonnay epitomizes what Napa fans hope for. Abundant ripe fruit on the nose in the form of dried pineapple is met with less-ripe flavors of apple to alert the senses that something wonderful is about to happen. You’ll spot the perfected balance on the palate, with that tropical fruit flavor bursting through, prompting immediate salivation. It holds back at the end though, so as not to build. Apple again on the aftertaste keeps it fresh. Upon each entry, the process starts again. This is a crowd-pleaser and a safe bet for any on-premise menu.

Fortified Wine Cocktails To Strengthen Your Resolve This Winter

Being from Ireland, a Hot Toddy was the go-to remedy for all colds and cases of flu while I was a young woman, and a sherry-based nightcap was necessary on a cold night for anyone who was interested in sound sleep. These fortified-wine-based staples are becoming increasingly popular in the States now, and have been making their mark more indelibly over the past five to six years. We’ve seen a real shift in consumer attention to ports, brandies and sherries, perhaps in response to mixologists who are adopting them to create some truly outstanding cocktails.

Bonfort’s WOW, Groth 2015 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

It was 1981 when Dennis and Judy Groth purchased a 121-acre parcel of land in Napa and from that day to this the focus has been on producing a handful of wines but specializing in Cabernet Sauvignon. Their 2015 Reserve Cabernet is such a comprehensive Cabernet, allowing the fruit to be the star power with support from 100% new French oak barrels. Harvested over a two-week period in Oakville, this lush fruit reaches out with blackberry, blueberry, cassis, black currant, plum, and cedar box with an acidity that belies the structure of the wine.

Bonfort’s Vodka Report 2018

According to the Distilled Spirits Council, vodka has become the backbone of the spirits industry, accounting for 32% of all volume. In 2017, 71.3 million 9-liter cases of vodka were sold in the United States, generating $6.2 billion in revenue for distillers.

The Council states that an important growth driver has been the continued popularity of flavored vodkas as they now account for around 21% of all vodkas sold in the U.S. Today, consumers can enjoy vodkas that have been infused with natural spices, refreshing citrus flavors, raspberry, vanilla and other alternatives.
